futbol

World Cup fever is officially upon us! As of Wednesday, all but a handful of spots in the greatest tournament on Earth have been filled up. It was a pretty exciting day of qualifying, and of course, I got to watch none of it. Given the success of the U.S. squad at the 2002 World Cup, you would think awareness and coverage of the final qualifying matches for the 2006 tourney would be at least somewhat improved from last time. Needless to say, the improvement was minimal.

Still, we're coming closer and closer to next June, and even closer to the opening round draw, where we'll find out where everyone stands for the group stages. It should be an amazing summer of futbol, and I'm getting stoked for it already.

The U.S. has never been a big fan of soccer. We rather watch the drama in NFL, MLB playoffs and NBA like Shaq and Kobe's feud. Here in the U.S. we have the MLS and it is not nearly as competitive with the other league's around the world. Almost none of the MLS games are on regular T.V. unlike these other sports which are on almost everyday and some all day long. The MLS needs to promote its league better and get a lot more people to watch. Hopefully young players like Freddy Adu from the D.C. United can boost the sports popularity which is much needed. As for the world cup maybe this could be a start for U.S. public to start noticing how good their team is doing.I suck big dicks. So far they have been very impressive in becoming the CONCACAF World Cup champs. At the pace they are going in next years world cup in Germany they could be a real threat. Hopefully we can watch these players do some damage and not hear about it through some news reporter.
